How to get there

Orvieto is ideally located in the south-east of Umbria, on the border with Lazio (Viterbo) and southern Tuscany (provinces of Grosseto and Siena). The city is well served by the rail network from the highway.

By car

It is very simple: from the A1 motorway exit at Orvieto toll both and follow the signs for the center, which is about 4.5 km far from the motorway. The city is placed at about one and a half hou drive from Rome and an 1 hour and 40 minutes from Florence.

 

Coming from the main regional road E 45 (from Perugia-Assisi) take the exit of Orvieto; from there take the road that runs all along the Corbara Lake and in about 30 minutes you reach Orvieto. Other main towns in Umbria, like Perugia, Assisi, Terni, are easily accessible, taking the same E 45 road, which takes about half an hour from Orvieto.

Another way  to arrive to Orvieto is by the national road Via Cassia (coming from south, Viterbo-Rome), which descends from the Buonviaggio-Villanova towns with a nice panoramic view of the city.

 

By bus                           

Two local companies (Busitalia and Cotral) provide urban and extraurban services to reach surroundings towns like Bagnoregio, Acquapendente, Bolsena, Porano, Allerona.

The bus station is located in Piazza Matteotti (in front of the train station and next to the funicular), while the parking lot for the tourist bus is in the large parking in Piazza della Pace (below the train station). How to get to Orvieto by Train

Orvieto is located on the Rome-Florence-Milan line and easily accessible by train.  The train station, bus station and the funicular are all located in Piazzale Matteotti in Orvieto Scalo. Orvieto’s train station is on a main Rome to Milan route, which crosses major cities including Florence, Arezzo and Bologna. Moreover from the city you can easily take the train to Rome (1 hours) and Florence (2 hours approx.).

How to get to Orvieto by Plane

The closest major airports and are one of Rome-Ciampino and Rome-Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci), the latter from Orvieto is about 1.5 hours and can be reached via the A1 motorway.
Another airport placed at approx. 1 hour from Orvieto is Perugia “San Francesco da Assisi” (in the area of Sant ‘Egidio) which, for the most part accomodates flights run by low-cost airlines.
